Preventive collections: act before delinquency gets expensive

Once an obligation falls into arrears, every day that passes lowers the chance of recovering it. Collecting early costs a fraction of collecting late and does not wear down the business relationship. We step in while the credit can still be recovered amicably, with a legal and financial assessment that defines what can be demanded, how and with what backing.

01 / When it makes sense

Four signs that there is still time

Preventive collections do not apply to the entire portfolio. They apply to this part.

Early delinquency

First days past due

The debtor still responds to contact and the conversation does not start from conflict. This is the window where every action pays off most.

Good track record

Temporary difficulty

Customers who have always paid and are going through a rough patch. Here the goal is not to apply pressure: it is to restructure without losing the customer.

Repeat delinquency

The same debtor every quarter

When the problem is not willingness to pay but the structure of the agreement, the balance keeps coming back. Fix the agreement, not just the balance.

Documentation

Guarantees never reviewed

Transactions whose contractual terms nobody examined in detail. If the backing will not hold up, pressing on it is wasted time.

If your portfolio already shows advanced delinquency or debtors who have stopped responding, the right starting point is pre-legal collections.

02 / The window that decides

Collecting early costs a fraction

The likelihood of recovery does not drop all at once: it drops every day. Each delinquency bucket that passes requires more effort, more cost and more structure to collect the same dollar.

That is why the key decision is not how to collect, but when to start. A portfolio worked from the first days past due needs less intensity, less escalation and less litigation.

Once that window has passed, the right order is to start with a portfolio audit that identifies which part can still be collected amicably.

The later you step in, the more it costs to recover. Preventive collections work on the left side of the curve.

03 / How we work

Three moves, in this order

Order matters: contacting before reviewing is the most common mistake.

01

Legal and financial assessment

Before contacting anyone, we review contracts, guarantees and credit terms to establish what is legally enforceable and with which instruments.

02

Formal demands

Communications that serve two purposes at once: securing payment and creating a record. Every demand is logged and can be used if the case escalates.

03

Enforceable agreements

An agreement the debtor cannot meet is just a postponement. It is structured around real ability to pay and drafted to be enforceable.

04 / What your institution gets

What changes in your operation

  • Fewer average days past due

Early intervention shortens the recovery cycle and improves cash flow.

  • Less repeat delinquency

By fixing the structure of the agreement and not just the balance, the same debtor stops reappearing every quarter.

  • Fewer escalations to court

Every case resolved at the preventive stage is a lawsuit that never gets filed, with the time and cost savings that implies.

  • Business relationship intact

A customer who pays without feeling harassed remains a customer.

  • Full traceability

All collection activity is documented under personal data protection protocols.

05 / FAQ

What we're always asked

Ask another question ↗
01How do preventive collections differ from pre-legal collections?

Preventive collections address obligations in early delinquency, where the debtor still responds and the business relationship can be preserved. Pre-legal collections step in when delinquency is already entrenched and a more intensive contact strategy is needed. Many portfolios need both, in sequence.

02Can it be applied to a portfolio that is already several months past due?

It can, but performance drops. Preventive collections perform best the earlier the intervention. For seriously delinquent portfolios, we recommend starting with a portfolio audit to identify which bucket can still be collected amicably.

03How is the customer relationship protected during collections?

With defined contact protocols, certified agents and quality control over communications. All collection activity is carried out under the personal data protection laws applicable in each country.

04Do systems need to be integrated to get started?

Not to get started. We can work from portfolio files on day one and, in parallel, set up API integration with your ERP or CRM, which usually takes just a few days.
